Insurance and Out-of-Network Benefits

Behar Counseling is an out-of-network provider and does not bill insurance directly. This means payment is due at the time of service.

Some insurance plans offer partial or full reimbursement for out-of-network therapy. If your plan includes out-of-network benefits, you may be able to submit a superbill to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.

I can provide a superbill upon request, and I have also partnered with Mentaya to help clients check their out-of-network benefits and submit claims more easily. You can use the tool provided to see whether you may qualify for reimbursement.

Please note that reimbursement depends on your specific insurance plan and is not guaranteed. I recommend contacting your insurance company directly to understand your out-of-network benefits.

Questions to Ask Your Insurance Company

When calling your insurance company, you may want to ask:

  • Do I have out-of-network mental health benefits?

  • What percentage of the session fee is reimbursed for an out-of-network therapist?

  • Do I have an out-of-network deductible? If so, how much is it, how much has been met, and when does it reset?

  • Is there a limit to the number of therapy sessions covered per year?

  • Are extended therapy sessions covered? If so, which add-on codes are covered?

  • Do I need prior authorization before seeing an out-of-network therapist?

  • How do I submit claims for reimbursement?

  • What information needs to be included on my superbill?

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Online therapy allows us to meet through a secure video platform from the comfort of your home or another private space. I offer online therapy for clients located in Massachusetts, Washington, and Vermont. During online sessions, we can work on the same concerns we would address in person, including eating disorders, trauma, anxiety, perfectionism, and EMDR therapy when clinically appropriate.

  • Yes. I offer in-person therapy in Needham, Massachusetts at 1000 Great Plain Ave, 3rd floor #1, Needham, MA 02492. In-person sessions may be a good fit for clients who prefer face-to-face support, are seeking EMDR therapy, or are interested in EMDR intensives.

  • Behar Counseling is an out-of-network provider and does not bill insurance directly. Some clients are able to receive partial reimbursement through their out-of-network benefits. I can provide a superbill upon request, and you can use the Mentaya tool on this page to check whether your plan may offer reimbursement.

  • Many clients use HSA or FSA funds to pay for therapy, depending on their plan. You may want to check with your benefits provider to confirm eligibility.

  • If we determine we’re a good fit during the consultation call, then we will schedule our first session, called an “intake session” which is fancy way of saying a "get to know you" session.

Your first appointment is a chance for us to get to know each other and begin understanding what brings you to therapy. We may talk about your current concerns, history, goals, symptoms, support system, and what you’re hoping will feel different. We will also discuss what kind of therapy approach may feel supportive and whether ongoing work together feels like the right fit.

  • Short answer: it depends!

Longer answer: I meet with the majority of my clients weekly or every-other-week. I recommend when possible that we meet weekly for at least the first 4 weeks to help establish a good foundation. That being said, we'll chat about how often sessions should happen to match what works best for you. And as we go along, we'll keep checking in to make sure it's still working for you and your needs.

When it comes to how long you'll be in therapy, it's all about what works best for YOU. Some clients are here to create a long-term therapeutic relationship and others might prefer a more short-term approach.

  • I offer online therapy for clients located in Massachusetts, Washington, and Vermont, as well as in-person therapy in Needham, Massachusetts.

  • I provide therapy on an outpatient basis so my therapy practice is not a fit for those in active crisis. Additionally, I do not see folks actively struggling with substance abuse, experiencing hallucinations, or children younger than 12.

If your needs are outside my scope, require a higher level of support, or would be better served by a different type of provider or treatment setting, I will do my best to help guide you toward appropriate next steps or referrals.
